Ghosts, a special preview charity screening

movie_ghost.jpg On August 6th, there is a special preview screening of Nick Broomfield's GHOSTS. The film is a dramatisation of what led to the drowning of 23 Chinese migrant workers in Morecambe Bay, northern England, in February 2004. Proceeds from the ticket sales will be divided between Transient  Workers Count Too, Migrant Voices and a fund for the Morecambe Bay tragedy victims' families. The screening will be  followed by a discussion on the issues raised by the film, and is co-organised with the British Council and Golden Village.

The film tells the story of Ai Qin, a Chinese immigrant to the UK. It follows her from China to the UK and looks at the work she does in the food industry. It reveals that the UK's food industry is heavily dependent on underpaid, exploited migrant labour. Eventually she starts work cockle-picking at Morecambe Bay. The film begins and ends with the disaster in 2004, when the rapidly rising tide took the lives of 23 workers who had paid to be brought to Britain so that they could earn money for their families - a motivation driving migrant workers worldwide.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to TWC2, Migrant Voices and a special fund for the victims of Morecambe Bay.
