A new helpline for migrant workers in Singapore will be launched on 17 December 2006. It will be staffed by volunteers who will give a sympathetic hearing to individuals in distress or needing advice. The help line is an initiative of Transient Workers Count Too and is supported by Telcom 1515.

The launch will take place at a celebration of International Migrants' Day (IMD)*, sponsored by Telcom 1515 and supported by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Association of Employment Agencies (Singapore) and Western Union. It will be held at Ananda Bhavan Restaurant.

Madam Halimah Yacob, MP for Jurong GRC and Assistant Secretary for NTUC, will address the celebration as Guest of Honour.

The helpline volunteers will be awarded a certificate in recognition of their participation in the training programme for help line and their successful passing of a concluding exam.

At the end of the ceremony, Singaporean volunteers will go out to locations in the different areas where migrant workers gather to present them with a small selection of gifts as a token of Singaporean appreciation of the contribution they have made to our country's development and well being.

You are invited to send a journalist and a photographer to the ceremony. We believe that the new help line responds to a real need and we hope that you will be able to report on this start-up event. We are sure that it will be of interest to many Singaporeans.

Details of the ceremony are as follows:

Press Release: 14 December 2006

International Migrants Day 2006:
Strong support for planned events/Interview possibilities

As we make the final preparations for the International Migrants Day events planned for the coming Sunday (17 December), Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2) wishes to express its appreciation for the contributions of a number of organisations and individuals.

There are two parts to the celebration:
  • A gathering that will be addressed by guest of honour, Halimah Yacob (MP for Jurong GRC and Assistant Secretary of NTUC). Our new help line will be launched and 19 people who volunteered to staff the line and undertook the necessary training for it will be honoured;

  • A distribution of various gifts to migrant workers as a 'thank-you' gesture from Singaporeans. This will take place from 4.30 onwards at five locations where migrant workers who have a day off on Sunday meet up and relax. In addition to a gift, each worker will get a card with the new help line number on it.
Ananda Bhavan restaurant is partnering us for this event, kindly providing the use of the floor above their Little India premises for the celebration. Furthermore, they are welcoming migrant workers at all four of their outlets by offering them bites to eat. A spokesperson for the restaurant said that, as the workers contribute a lot to our society, this is 'a very small thing' to do as a gesture of thanks.

Telcom 1515 are sponsoring the celebration at Ananda Bhavan and they have contributed  1,200 phone cards as gifts. They are also giving welcome support to the help line that is being launched on Sunday.

Western Union have partnered us in this celebration and have sponsored the provision of 1000 water bottles that will be one of the gifts being distributed; they also supported TWC2's IMD sports day last year.

The Ministry of Manpower has given 1000toiletry bags to be distributed as gifts for migrant workers, a welcome gesture of appreciation from the ministry that has the chief responsibility for handling migrant labour affairs in Singapore.

Among the bodies that are helping to bring together volunteers for the gift distribution are the Archdiocesan Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ACMI),  Association of Employment Agencies (Singapore) (AEAS), Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics (HOME) and the Singapore National Trades Union Congress - Migrant Workers' Forum.

We hope that you will come to the celebration at Ananda Bhavan. At the end of the celebration, some of those involved in making it possible will be available for interview:
